Low-Sodium Meal Kits: What 206 Measured Recipes Actually Show

The median meal kit dinner carries 1,190 mg of sodium — 52% of a day's limit. One filter cuts that 2.8x, and it is off by default.

✓ Fact-checkedMads BukholtBy Mads BukholtPublished 2026-07-30

Short answer: No US meal kit is a "low-sodium meal kit" by default — the median HelloFresh serving carries 1,190 mg, about 52% of an adult's entire daily allowance in one dinner. But you do not need a different provider; you need a filter. HelloFresh's own Sodium Smart tag is completely reliable in our measurement: all 37 tagged recipes land at or below 800 mg, median 480 mg, versus 1,350 mg for everything else. That is the single highest-leverage control in the product, and it is switched off by default.

Key takeaways

  • We measured sodium in all 206 recipes on HelloFresh's US menu across 3 consecutive weeks, using the panels HelloFresh publishes itself.
  • Median sodium is 1,190 mg per serving — roughly 52% of the FDA's 2,300 mg Daily Value in a single meal. 22 recipes (10.7%) carry a full day's sodium or more.
  • The "Sodium Smart" filter works. Every one of the 37 tagged recipes is at or below 800 mg (median 480 mg, highest 660 mg). Untagged recipes run a median of 1,350 mg — 2.8× higher — and 13.0% of them exceed a full day's sodium.
  • 30 recipes come in at 600 mg or less, and 26 of those also deliver 30 g of protein or more — low sodium does not mean a small, unsatisfying dinner.
  • We have not yet measured EveryPlate, Green Chef, Home Chef, Blue Apron or Sunbasket, so we publish no sodium figure for them. Below we set out exactly what to check yourself.

The problem: meal kits are saltier than they look

Meal kits are marketed on freshness, and freshness is real — you are cooking from raw ingredients rather than reheating something shelf-stable. But sodium does not come mainly from the protein or the vegetables. It comes from the sauces, stocks, glazes, spice blends and cheeses that make a 25-minute weeknight recipe taste like it took an hour. Those arrive in the box too.

Across the 206 recipes we measured, the median serving carries 1,190 mg of sodium. The FDA sets 2,300 mg as an adult's Daily Value. So a typical meal kit dinner spends about 52% of the day's entire sodium budget on one meal — before breakfast, lunch, snacks or anything you add at the table.

The top of the range is where it gets stark. 22 of 206 recipes (10.7%) meet or exceed a full day's sodium in a single serving. The saltiest we recorded carries 5,150 mg — 224% of the daily limit in one plate of food.

The five saltiest recipes we measured

Crispy Buffalo Halloumi Sandwiches3230 mg140%1,360 kcal32 g

Every one is a fried, glazed or sauce-heavy dish. That is the pattern: coating and sauce drive sodium, not the meat.

The finding: the "Sodium Smart" filter genuinely works

This is the part worth knowing, and it is good news. We split all 206 recipes by whether HelloFresh applies its own Sodium Smart label, then compared the measured values.

GroupRecipesMedian sodiumHighestOver a full day's sodium
Tagged "Sodium Smart"37480 mg660 mg0 recipes
Not tagged1691,350 mg5,150 mg22 recipes (13.0%)

The separation is clean. 100% of Sodium Smart recipes land at or below 800 mg, and not one of them approaches the daily limit. The untagged menu runs 2.8× higher at the median. We found no mislabelled recipe in either direction.

That matters more than any comparison between providers. Switching from HelloFresh to a competitor is a guess — we have not measured the others, and neither has anyone else. Ticking one filter inside the box you already have is a measured, 2.8× improvement. The catch is that the filter is off by default, so the browsing experience most people see surfaces 2,000 mg-plus dinners with no warning attached.

The lowest-sodium meal kit recipes we measured

30 recipes came in at 600 mg of sodium or less — around a quarter of a day's allowance, which is a genuinely moderate dinner. Here are the lowest, with calories and protein so you can see the trade-off, or rather the absence of one.

Note what is not happening here: these are not diet plates. 26 of the 30 lowest-sodium recipes also deliver 30 g of protein or more, and 32 of the 37 Sodium Smart recipes clear that bar. You are not trading satisfaction for sodium — you are trading sauce.

What about the other meal kits?

We do not know yet, and we are not going to guess. Our completed dataset covers HelloFresh only. EveryPlate, Green Chef, Home Chef, Blue Apron and Sunbasket do not publish per-recipe nutrition in a form we have been able to collect at scale, so we publish no sodium figure for them rather than an estimate. We are working through them and will publish each as its dataset is complete.

In the meantime, here is what actually predicts a lower-sodium box, based on what our data shows drives the number:

  • Look for a sodium filter, not a "healthy" label. "Healthy", "balanced" and "wholesome" are unmeasured marketing. A named sodium tag is a testable claim — and in HelloFresh's case it held up perfectly.
  • Check the per-recipe nutrition panel before you pick, not after. Every major provider publishes one. The spread within a single week's menu is far wider than the gap between providers.
  • Avoid the crispy, glazed, sticky and "smothered" dishes. Every recipe in our top-five sodium list is one of those. It is the sauce and the coating.
  • Grain bowls, salads and simply-cooked fish sit lowest. Our entire sub-600 mg list is dominated by them.
  • Do not assume organic means low sodium. Certification governs how ingredients are grown, not how much salt goes in the sauce sachet.

How much sodium should a meal actually have?

The FDA's Daily Value is 2,300 mg, and the American Heart Association suggests an ideal limit closer to 1,500 mg for most adults, particularly anyone managing blood pressure. Dinner is usually the largest meal, so a reasonable target is roughly 600–800 mg for a main meal — which is exactly where the Sodium Smart range sits, and well below the 1,190 mg median of the full menu.

If you have been told to reduce sodium for a medical reason, treat this page as a starting point for narrowing the menu, not as clinical advice — and check the per-recipe panel yourself before ordering. We publish the raw dataset so you or a dietitian can check any figure directly.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a genuinely low-sodium meal kit?
Not as a whole subscription. No major US meal kit is low-sodium by default — the median HelloFresh serving carries 1,190 mg, about 52% of a day's allowance. But within HelloFresh, the 37 recipes tagged "Sodium Smart" all come in at or below 800 mg with a median of 480 mg, which is a genuinely moderate dinner. The low-sodium meal kit is a filter, not a brand.
Does HelloFresh's Sodium Smart filter actually work?
Yes. We checked every recipe. All 37 Sodium Smart recipes in our 206-recipe dataset measured at or below 800 mg (median 480 mg, highest 660 mg), and none came close to the daily limit. Untagged recipes ran a median of 1,350 mg — 2.8× higher — with 13.0% exceeding a full day's sodium. We found no mislabelled recipes.
How much sodium is in a typical meal kit meal?
Median 1,190 mg per serving across the 206 HelloFresh recipes we measured, ranging from 80 mg to 5,150 mg. That median is roughly 52% of the FDA's 2,300 mg Daily Value in one meal.
Can I get low sodium and high protein at the same time?
Yes, easily. 26 of the 30 recipes at or below 600 mg of sodium also deliver at least 30 g of protein, and 32 of the 37 Sodium Smart recipes clear 30 g. Low sodium in this menu means less sauce and coating, not smaller portions.
Which meal kit has the least sodium overall?
We cannot answer that honestly yet. We have measured HelloFresh in full; EveryPlate, Green Chef, Home Chef, Blue Apron and Sunbasket are not yet in our dataset, and we will not publish a figure we have not collected. Anyone ranking all six on sodium today is estimating.
Where does this data come from?
HelloFresh's own published per-serving nutrition panels on its public US menu pages, collected across 3 consecutive menu weeks (2026-W31, 2026-W32, 2026-W33) and aggregated by us. The raw dataset and the collector script are published so anyone can reproduce it. We do not model or estimate any value.

How we measured this

HelloFresh publishes a full per-serving nutrition panel for every recipe on its public US menu pages. We collected all 206 recipes across 3 consecutive menu weeks (2026-W31, 2026-W32, 2026-W33) on 2026-07-30, recorded the sodium value exactly as published, and grouped by HelloFresh's own recipe tags. No modelling, no estimates, no adjustment.
