We Analyzed the Nutrition Panel of Every Recipe on HelloFresh's US Menu

206 recipes across 3 menu weeks, using HelloFresh's own published per-serving figures. 10.7% carry a full day's sodium in one serving.

What we found

  • We pulled the nutrition panel HelloFresh publishes for every one of the 206 recipes on its US menus across 3 consecutive weeks (2026-W31, 2026-W32, 2026-W33). No estimates — these are HelloFresh's own per-serving numbers.
  • 22 recipes (10.7%) contain an entire day's sodium or more in one serving — at or above the FDA's 2,300 mg Daily Value. The single saltiest hits 5,150 mg (224% of a day).
  • The median recipe carries 1,190 mg of sodium — about 52% of a full day in one dinner. A third (33.0%) clear two-thirds of a day.
  • 54.4% exceed the American Heart Association's entire daily saturated-fat allowance (13 g) in a single serving.
  • Portions are large: median 810 kcal, and 22.8% top 1,000 kcal per serving.
  • Protein is the genuine strength — 80.6% deliver 30 g or more (median 38 g). Fiber is the weak spot: median 6 g, and 45.6% deliver 5 g or less.

Short answer: HelloFresh's US menu is high in protein and generous in portion size, and notably high in sodium and saturated fat. Across 206 recipes the median serving carries 1,190 mg of sodium — roughly 52% of an adult's entire daily allowance in a single dinner — and 54.4% of recipes use up a full day's saturated fat on their own. The menu is not uniformly salty, though: 21.8% of recipes come in at 800 mg or less, so which recipes you pick matters more than which box you subscribe to.

Meal kit reviews almost always stop at price, taste and packaging. Nutrition, when it appears at all, is described in adjectives — "fresh", "balanced", "wholesome". We wanted numbers. HelloFresh publishes a full nutrition panel for every recipe on its public menu pages, so the data to answer the question properly is already sitting in the open. Nobody had aggregated it. We did.

This page is deliberately narrow: it covers HelloFresh US only. We are extending the same method to the other providers we track and will publish each one as its dataset is complete. We would rather publish one provider we have actually measured than six we have not.

How we collected this

HelloFresh server-renders its full weekly US menu — recipes plus per-serving nutrition panels — into the page source at hellofresh.com/menus/<week>. Our collector reads those pages for three consecutive menu weeks, extracts every recipe's published panel, and stores it keyed by HelloFresh's own recipe ID.

  • Source: HelloFresh US public weekly menu pages. Every recipe row below links back to the live HelloFresh page so you can re-check any figure.
  • Basis: per serving, exactly as HelloFresh publishes it. We do not model, estimate, adjust or re-weight anything.
  • Sample: 206 unique recipes across 2026-W31, 2026-W32, 2026-W33, collected 2026-07-30.
  • Reproducible: the raw dataset is published at hellofresh-us-nutrition.json. Run the collector yourself and you should land on the same numbers, allowing for menu rotation.

Reference points used for context: the FDA's 2,300 mg sodium Daily Value, the American Heart Association's 13 g saturated-fat limit for a 2,000-calorie diet, and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans' 25–38 g daily fiber recommendation. These are daily figures; a meal kit dinner is one meal of the day, which is exactly what makes the sodium numbers below worth knowing.

Sodium: the headline finding

Sodium is where the menu is most out of step with dietary guidance. The FDA sets 2,300 mg as an adult's Daily Value. The median HelloFresh serving is 1,190 mg — so a typical HelloFresh dinner spends about 52% of the day's sodium budget on one meal, before breakfast, lunch or anything else.

The tail is what stands out. 22 of 206 recipes (10.7%) meet or exceed a full day's sodium in a single serving. The saltiest we recorded carries 5,150 mg — 224% of the daily limit in one plate of food.

The five highest-sodium recipes

RecipeSodium/serving% of daily limitCalories
Crispy Orange Chicken & Szechuan Green Beans5,150 mg224%1,650 kcal

Rib-Eye Bistec Encebollado & Crispy Sorullos3,350 mg146%1,750 kcal
Crispy Buffalo Halloumi Sandwiches3,230 mg140%1,360 kcal

It is emphatically not the whole menu, and that is the useful part. 45 recipes (21.8%) come in at 800 mg or less, and the lowest we found was just 80 mg. The spread across a single week's menu is wider than the gap between most competing providers — which means recipe selection inside the box is the lever that actually matters.

HelloFresh does label some of this: 37 of the 206 recipes carry its own "Sodium Smart" tag. That filter is genuinely useful and under-used — but it covers roughly a quarter of the menu, so the default browsing experience still surfaces plenty of 2,000 mg-plus dinners with no warning attached.

Calories and saturated fat

Median energy is 810 kcal per serving, with 47 recipes (22.8%) above 1,000 kcal and a maximum of 1,750 kcal. For context, a 2,000-calorie day leaves roughly 600–800 kcal for dinner; the median HelloFresh serving is comfortably above that, and the top of the range is most of a day's eating in one sitting.

Saturated fat follows the same shape. The AHA suggests capping saturated fat at about 13 g a day on a 2,000-calorie diet. 112 recipes (54.4%) hit or pass that in one serving, topping out at 46 g.

Read generously, big portions are a feature — nobody finishes a HelloFresh box hungry, and 45 recipes (21.8%) are tagged under 650 calories for people who want the opposite. Read critically, "fresh ingredients delivered to your door" is doing a lot of work in the marketing for a menu whose median dinner is 810 calories.

Where the menu is genuinely strong — and genuinely weak

Protein is the strength. Median protein is 38 g per serving and 166 of 206 recipes (80.6%) deliver at least 30 g, the threshold commonly used for a protein-adequate main meal. The top of the range reaches 80 g. If you are choosing a meal kit primarily to hit a protein target, this menu does that job well without needing to think about it — see our high-protein meal kits comparison.

Fiber is the weakness. The Dietary Guidelines put adult fiber intake at 25–38 g a day. The median HelloFresh serving provides 6 g, and 94 recipes (45.6%) deliver 5 g or less. A dinner contributing under a fifth of the daily fiber target while contributing over half the daily sodium is a lopsided trade.

Menu composition explains a lot of it: only 39 of 206 recipes (18.9%) are on the Veggie line. The menu is built around meat and a starch, with vegetables in a supporting role. If you want the reverse, that is a structural argument for a vegetarian meal kit or a plan built around produce rather than a protein-first menu.

What to actually do with this

None of this makes HelloFresh a bad choice. It makes it a menu that rewards choosing carefully, and the spread within the menu is large enough that a careful picker and a careless one end up eating very differently from the same subscription.

  • Use the filters. "Sodium Smart" (37 recipes) and "Under 650 Calories" (41 recipes) are the two highest-leverage controls in the product, and they are off by default.
  • Watch the crispy/glazed/sticky dishes. Every recipe in our top-five sodium list is a fried, glazed or sauce-heavy dish. Sauce and coating, not the protein, drive the sodium.
  • Add your own fiber. At a median 6 g, a side salad, a can of beans or a wholegrain swap moves the needle more than any provider choice.
  • Don't read portion size as health. A 810-calorie median means these are large servings. Splitting the biggest dishes across more people is a legitimate way to use the box.

Frequently asked questions

Is HelloFresh unhealthy?
Not straightforwardly. Across 206 recipes the protein content is strong (80.6% deliver 30 g or more) and 21.8% of recipes are moderate in sodium at 800 mg or less. The concerns are concentrated: a median 1,190 mg of sodium per serving, 54.4% of recipes using a full day's saturated fat, and a low median fiber of 6 g. Recipe selection changes the outcome more than the choice of provider does.
How much sodium is in a HelloFresh meal?
The median is 1,190 mg per serving across the 206 recipes we measured — about 52% of the FDA's 2,300 mg Daily Value. The range runs from 80 mg to 5,150 mg, and 10.7% of recipes meet or exceed a full day's sodium in one serving.
How many calories are in a HelloFresh serving?
Median 810 kcal, ranging from 460 to 1,750 kcal. 22.8% of recipes exceed 1,000 kcal per serving, while 21.8% come in at 650 kcal or less.
Where does this data come from?
HelloFresh's own published per-serving nutrition panels on its public US menu pages, collected across 3 consecutive menu weeks (2026-W31, 2026-W32, 2026-W33). We publish the raw dataset and the collector script so anyone can reproduce it. We do not estimate or model any value.
Do you have this data for other meal kits?
Not yet. HelloFresh publishes its full menu nutrition in a machine-readable way; several competitors render menus client-side or omit panels, so each one needs its own collector. We are working through them and will publish each provider as its dataset is complete rather than filling gaps with estimates.
